Accommodation

Stockbatch Granary

Stockbatch Granary which sleeps 14 is reached by a mile-long drive passing through the fields of corn and grazing sheep of the 1,000 acres Pitchford Estate. It comprises an 18th-century granary, clapperboard barn, stables and cowsheds, and nestles on a south-facing slope, at the bottom of which a stream wends its way under an old red sandstone bridge. A large courtyard garden enclosed by a stone wall gives a panoramic view of the Shropshire Hill Country. The owners' flock of pedigree Zwartbles sheep graze in the field and the apple orchard just by the Granary.

Within six miles of Stockbatch Granary is historic Shrewsbury with its fascinating architecture, castle, farmers market, shops and wealth of pubs and restaurants. Easily accessible is popular Church Stretton, historic Much Wenlock (birthplace of the modern Olympic Games) and Shropshire's finest town Ludlow, framed by the gentle Clee Hill, with its impressive castle, magnificent church, half-timbered buildings and Georgian red-brick houses. Attingham Park (NT) and the World Heritage site of Ironbridge Gorge are all within easy driving distance.

Shepherd’s Hut

The Shepherd's Hut was jammed into a hedge on the Estate ever since we can remember unfortunately getting more derelict year by year. The final straw was when a tractor drove into it! After digging the wheels out and cutting the hedge back to release the hut - it was taken to a barn in Dorset to dry out and be restored by Butterfield Ironworks. Once finished the hut will retain much of its original character with its rusty red corrugated iron sides and roof and wood paneled interior. To make the Hut habitable and comfortable it will regain an original Victorian cast iron burner and gain a double bed.

The hut will sit in the field below Stockbatch Granary amongst the Pitchford flock of Zwartbles sheep. We hope that guests staying at Stockbatch Granary will venture out to spend a night or two in the Hut during their stay. Perhaps we'll manage to bring people closer to what life might have been like on the Estate one hundred years ago when the shepherd and gamekeeper would have spent nights in the Hut looking after the sheep at lambing and keeping poachers from the pheasants.

Shepherd's Hut will be rented as a part of Stockbatch Granary in Summer 2011.
